Old School Training

Strength work is something that has been around for ever. Running hills, doing strength related exercises post run are all part of holding together form in the last parts of racing. Building a stronger body also helps with injury avoidance.

The audio in French (I think) but this clip of Herb Elliot and his coach Percy Ceruty shows some of the techniques that can be used today to stay strong and run faster.

Don't know about Herb Elliot. Check out the wikipedia page and learn more about the man who was undefeated over the 1500m and the mile and won gold at the 1960 Rome Olympics (1500m)
